Former Sen. Brown addresses Nashua Lions Club

NASHUA - Former U.S. Sen. Scott Brown of Massachusetts said Saturday night he was in "no hurry'' to outline his short-term political ambitions.

During a speech at a Lions Club event, he again provided no insight regarding a potential run for public office in New Hampshire, possibly against Democratic U.S. Sen. Jeanne Shaheen.

Brown, who has a vacation home in Rye, has made several appearances in New Hampshire over the last several months and said again he has made no decision.

"I don't owe anybody anything in terms of timing," he said. "There's no hurry. I'm enjoying the summer, and now I'm going to enjoy the fall."

Brown said he has tried to use speaking platforms to advocate the end of the Republican in-fighting that has seen some libertarian-minded Republicans, such as U.S. Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky, clash with the rest of the party.

"We can do better and we deserve better," he said of Republicans. "We can't keep demonizing and vilifying each other in the Republican Party. We need to be a larger idea party and more respectful because there is room for me and (U.S. Sen.) Kelly (Ayotte of New Hampshire) and Rand Paul and Sarah Palin. There's room for all of us."

Brown served three years in the Senate after defeating Democratic candidate Martha Coakley in a special election in February 2010 to fill the remaining term of the Senate seat left vacant by the death of Edward Kennedy in 2009. Brown was defeated in a reelection bid in November by Democratic challenger Elizabeth Warren.

He said he is a 23-year member of the Lions Club and wanted to mark the Nashua Lions Club's 90th anniversary, which was celebrated at the Crowne Plaza on Somerset Parkway.

"It was a good opportunity to come up and pay tribute to their 90th-year celebration," he said.
