Jesse Brooks to challenge prison confinement for his part in 2005 Deerfield murder

MANCHESTER — A team seeking a new trial for murder-conspirator Jesse Brooks said they will soon file a federal suit challenging his treatment behind bars.

Investigators and his mother, Lorraine Brooks, said he is frequently shuffled among Arizona prisons and is denied the morphine he needs for a back injury.

His legal team said the unfair treatment prevents him from working with lawyers and investigators in a court case claiming ineffective counsel in his murder conspiracy trial involving the 2005 murder of handyman Jack Reid in Deerfield.

Jesse Brooks’ millionaire father was convicted of murder for hire in Reid's death. The elder Brooks suspected Reid of stealing a trailer containing motorcycles and paid others to kill him.

The younger Brooks is serving a 15- to 30-year sentence. In October of 2011, the N.H. Supreme Court unanimously upheld his murder conspiracy conviction, rejecting his argument that a witness was incompetent to testify. Justices also said a 32-month delay in the trial date was partly Brooks’ fault and did not violate his right to a speedy trial.

"I ... live with knowing my son isn't getting his medication. He is suffering for something he had nothing to do with," Mrs. Brooks said Thursday.
