Bedford officials, legislators to hold joint session Sept. 19
BEDFORD — School board members, town councilors and state representatives are expected to discuss a range of issues that affect the town, from the Common Core State Standards to roads and gasoline taxes, when they meet Sept. 19.
Councilor Chris Bandazian will co-moderate the meeting with school board Chairwoman Terry Wolf. The meeting will begin at 7 p.m. in the Bedford Library’s McAllaster Meeting Room, 3 Meetinghouse Road
State representatives scheduled to attend include Dave Danielson, John Graham, Keith Murphy, Kelleigh Murphy and Moe Villeneuve. Town Manager Jessie Levine and Tim Mayes, school superintendent, also have been invited.
Although topics will be restricted by what is achievable in the Legislature, the focus of the meeting will center on Bedford’s interests now and in the future.
“Some meritorious ideas may take years to take root at the Legislature. Both the school district and town will be interested in revenue items. The school board has indicated an interest in discussing whether there are potential changes in adequacy funding, New Hampshire Retirement and capital improvements. The council also has an interest in New Hampshire Retirement System developments and our own revenue sources: highway and bridge aid, and rooms and meal tax,” said Bandazian.
The public is invited, but to observe only, Scanlon said.
“They cannot participate in a speaking role. The next time we do this, we’ll invite the public to speak to the three governing agencies on what’s on their mind,” he said.
Scanlon hopes such meetings in town occur two or three times a year.
“The legislators have no medium to hear from voters. The council hears from residents, and the school district hears from parents, but legislators have no or little contact with the public. This will give them that,” he said.
