WINDHAM — Local foodies can get a true taste of Windham later this month during the first ever Windham Foodie Weekend.
From Sept. 27 to 29, area eateries will be offering special sales, promotions and samples. On Saturday, Sept. 28, from noon to 4 p.m., the Foodie Expo and Farmers Market will be held at Searles School and Chapel, where 20 area businesses will share free samples and sell a variety of specialized food items.
Windham Community Development Director Laura Scott said the idea arose during a visit to the Lobster Tail restaurant in Windham last summer.
Scott visits several of the town’s businesses each month to discuss current trends and challenges in the local business climate. That’s when Mark Smith, owner of the Lobster Tail, made a suggestion.
“Lots of other communities are hosting these types of events, and Mark said, ‘Why not Windham?’” Scott said.
With Smith agreeing to help organize the event, Scott contacted area restaurants and specialty food shops, giving business owners the option of participating in the weekend and/or Foodie Expo.
“I visited a lot of the other farmers markets in the area and reached out to those vendors as well.” Scott said. “A lot of them are home-based businesses so the Foodie Expo and Farmers Market is perfect for them.”
Among the vendors participating in Saturday’s event at Searles School & Chapel are A Simply Wholesome Life, Baked on Pastries, Brookford Farm, Calcutta Curry, Common Man Restaurant, Courser Farm Kitchen, Cuz It’s Good, Frost This Cakes, Gone Baking, Home Free Treats, Laurel Hill Jams & Jellies, the Lobster Tail Restaurant, Sharon’s Granola, Sensationally Sweet Bakery, Small Batch Baking Company, Sweet Neem Tasting Table, Tastefully Simple and Wally’s Vegetables.
Admission is free and promotions will also be offered at various sites around town throughout the weekend, including Baked on Pastries, Synfully Sweet Treats, Sophisticakes, the Windham Restaurant, the Lobster Tail, the Windham Junction Kitchen and Lucia’s Bodega.
