Whitefield woman struck by Bethlehem police cruiser

BETHLEHEM — State police say a Whitefield woman was struck by a Bethlehem police cruiser late Saturday night.

Police say they responded to a motor vehicle accident on Main Street -- Route 302 -- in Bethlehem at 10:45 p.m. Saturday night, involving a local cruiser and a Whitefield woman, identified as Chelsi Shedd, 22.
Police say Shedd was crossing Main Street near the Colonial Theatre when she stepped off the sidewalk in front of a Bethlehem Police Ford Explorer, headed west on Main Street, operated by Officer Scott Powers

State police say Powers was unable to stop and struck Shedd as she stepped out from behind a Subaru Outback parked on the north side of the road.

Shedd was transported to Littleton Regional Hospital, where she was treated for minor injuries and released. Powers was not hurt.

State police say their investigation shows Shedd was crossing the road diagonally, and not in a crosswalk. Police said Shedd's vision was possibly obscured by the Subaru, as well as a Toyota pickup truck parked behind it. Police said alcohol consumption by Shedd may have been a contributing factor, and are still investigating.
They said the speed of the cruiser was not a contributing factor.
State police also reported the portion of Main Street where the accident occurred is lit by street lamps, and the road was when Shedd was struck.

The accident is being investigated by Trooper Sean McCarthy of State Police Troop F.
