NH names added to the Hampton monument

Added to the Global War on Terrorism Monument in Hampton this year are the names of three young men who died in service to their nation over the past year


--- Sgt. 1st Class Ryan J. Savard, 29, formerly of Jefferson, died on Oct. 13 during combat in Afghanistan. Assigned to U.S. Army Special Operations Command at Fort Bragg, N.C., he had previously deployed to Iraq and to Afghanistan three times..


-- Capt. Shawn G. Hogan, 28, of Salem died Oct. 17 from a training accident in Kentucky. A 2002 graduate of Salem High School and the valedictorian of Virginia Military Institute's Class of 2006, Hogan was commander of a Special Forces operational detachment headquartered at Fort Campbell.


-- 1st Lt. Paul M. DeMeo, 23, of Derry,an Army Ranger, died on May 14 while training at Fort Bragg, N.C. A 2007 graduate of Pinkerton Academy and 2011 graduate of West Point, he was a rifle platoon leader for the 3rd Brigade Combat Team.

Two other names were also added this year after the men were found to have met the criteria for inclusion on the monument:


-- Marine Lance Cpl. Dimitrios Gavriel, 29, a 1993 graduate of Timberlane Regional High School, where he was a champion wrestler. Back in his high school days, one of his teachers said of Gavriel: "If we were in a foxhole, we'd want Dimi next to us."

Gavriel graduated in 1997 from Brown University and became a successful Wall Street analyst. On Sept. 11, 2001, he was on the phone with a friend who worked in the World Trade Center, according to published reports.

He joined the Marines in 2003 and went to Iraq, where he was killed in action on Nov. 19, 2004.


-- Army Spc. Christopher Journeau,23, of Stratham, died on June 22, 2010, after serving a tour of duty as an infantryman in Iraq. According to his obituary, he was very proud of the veterans vanity plate on his "pride and joy," a 2007 Dodge Charger, "SCREWY."
