NH's Bishop Libasci joins Pope in call for peace in Syria

MANCHESTER — The Most Rev. Peter A. Libasci, bishop of Manchester, is asking the people of the diocese to unite with Pope Francis on Saturday by fasting and praying for peace in Syria.

The bishop calls to mind that “in praying for peace in Syria, we are also praying and hoping for the release of one of our own, journalist James Foley, of Rochester, who disappeared in northwest Syria on Thanksgiving Day, November 22, 2012. We will take this opportunity to stand together in asking God to lead us to a peaceful resolution of the violent situation in Syria.”

Pope Francis issued a plea for the world’s people to join together in praying for peace.

At his Angelus on Sunday, Sept. 1, Pope Francis said, “I have decided to proclaim for the whole church September 7, the vigil of the birth of Mary, Queen of Peace, a day of fasting and prayer for peace in Syria, the Middle East, and throughout the world. And I also invite each person, including our fellow Christians, followers of other religions and all men of good will, to participate, in whatever way they can, in this initiative. We will gather together in prayer, in a spirit of penitence, to ask from God this great gift (of peace) for the beloved Syrian nation and for all the situations of conflict and violence in the world.”

Libasci is asking priests who regularly celebrate a Saturday morning Mass in their parishes to use the Mass texts from the Roman Missal for “In Time of War or Civil Disturbance.” The bishop also provided suggestions for prayers and petitions and other information.

Fasting includes taking one full meal during the day. Two other meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to each person’s needs, but together they should not equal another full meal.
