Choice of hospitals, doctors limited for those using health care exchange

CONCORD – New Hampshire residents buying insurance through the health insurance exchanges beginning Oct. 1 will have limited choices for hospital care and doctors.

Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield, the only insurer approved in New Hampshire to offer policies on the health insurance exchange created under the Affordable Care Act, has narrowed the number of hospitals in its network through the exchange. Of the state's 26 hospitals, 14 are now in the company's network, and another may be added to increase access to prenatal and natal care in the North Country, company officials said Wednesday.

Appearing before the Joint Health Care Reform Oversight Committee, Anthem officials said the company conducted a survey nationally after the ACA was passed and found that people overwhelmingly preferred price over access to health care, according to Maria Proulx, Anthem NH's senior legal counsel.
