Call for voluntary water conservation issued in Durham

DURHAM &#-; A stage one water conservation alert was issued in town Friday due to a month of dry weather and subsequent receding flows in local rivers.

A stage one alert calls for community members to voluntarily limit the watering of gardens, landscaping and lawns between the hours of 8 p.m. and 7 a.m., refrain from washing vehicles, non-essential equipment and pavement, refrain from filling swimming pools or other outdoor recreation that uses water, and generally limiting all unnecessary outdoor water use.

Community members have also been encouraged to check for leaky faucets and to conserve indoor water use wherever possible.

Durham administrator Todd Selig said if the dry weather continues, the alert will be raised to stage two. He said the goal for a stage one alert is to maintain water demand at a constant rate for at least a two-week period after its implementation.

“Durham receives the majority of its drinking water from the Oyster River and the Lamprey River, and therefore the amount of river water available for water supply becomes limited during dry spells,” Selig said.
