PLAISTOW — It was a busy summer for Timberlane Regional School District facilities manager Jim Hughes, and nowhere was that more apparent than at the high school.
The big ticket item for summer work was the removal of two aging portable classrooms and the addition of two modern modular units.
The facilities staff removed the two older units and prepared the site for the delivery of the new units, according to Hughes. Once they were delivered, the district’s in-house electrician did all the wiring and a staff carpenter built new ramps and stairs.
Superintendent Earl Metzler noted that the district School Board authorized $175,000 for the new modular units.
Three options were looked at to pay for the units, from purchasing outright to leasing to leasing to own, Metzler said.
“We explored a number of options and we’re leasing to own, which is the least expensive option,” he said.
The district is budgeting $35,000 to lease the units, and after five years the district will own them.
“The students and teachers who use these spaces want me to extend their appreciation to the board,” said Metzler. “They are so much better than what was there. It’s a considerable upgrade.”
Other projects at the high school included some paving, painting of the gym and cafeteria, and extending water to the concession stand.
“We dug a trench from the corner of the boiler room and ran it to the concession stand,” said Hughes. “Now we have running water at the concession stand. The long-term plan for this building is to get sinks in there and make it more of a useable kitchen.”
District staff also renovated the home economics/culinary arts kitchen by adding new cabinets and redoing the plumbing.
Hughes said the goal over the summer was to complete projects that would be harder to do with students and staff in the schools.
“We still have a lot of projects to do, but they won’t impact the learning environment,” he said.
