Expanding horizons: Roy Shoults helps kids learn

September 02. 2013 7:35PM

The Manchester School District cannot afford an extra-curricular trip to watch a live opera performance. Thanks to Ward 4 School Board member Roy Shoults, 25 students got one anyway.

This past March, Shoults organized the trip to the Capitol Center for the Arts in Concord to watch a live, simulcast performance of New York City’s Metropolitain Opera. Shoults got Ted Herbert’s Music and Art Center to contribute to the cost of the tickets. Then-Superintendent Thomas Brennan personally covered the cost of the bus trip. The girls were treated to makeovers performed by cosmetology students at the Manchester School of Technology, and the boys got shaves. What a lovely experience.

Now Shoults is up to his glorious mischief again. He wants to raise enough money to cover the $89 cost of Advance Placement tests for low-income students. Shoults’ good deeds are part of a project he is calling Expanding Students’ Horizons. He has opened an account with the district, to which donations can be made. To donate or to find out how else to help, you can email Shoults at

If more public officials — or citizens — exhibited Shoults’ initiative and creativity, imagine the great things the school district could do.
