A storied celebration

From Moby Dick to Winnie the Pooh, residents paid homage to their favorite books in their Books on Parade-themed Labor Day celebration on Monday afternoon.

The parade is the culmination of the town's 96th annual Labor Day Weekend Celebration, said event volunteer Charlie Pyle, who said the weekend has always been about fun activities and raising money.

"We started with a Labor Day carnival 96 years ago to raise money, then for the Red Cross, and we have continued to this day. Now we raise money for the historical society," Pyle said.

The weekend started Friday night with a square dance at the Town Hall and continued Saturday with a tennis tournament and dance at the fire house.

On Sunday, the annual Mud Volley Ball Tournament and Golf Scramble were held.

Monday was the big event with children's activities, a White Elephant sale in the old town horse sheds and the Juried Arts & Crafts Fair.

"We don't do old home day. We don't do Fourth of July. This is our town day," Pyle said. "Everybody comes out before they go back to school or back home — the summer people — the rest of us hunker down," Pyle said.

Homemade floats for Books on Parade included "Gone with the Wind," "Charlotte's Web" and "Black Beauty."

Despite the threat of rain, residents lined Main Street for their annual parade.

Seven-year-old Hannah Beisang said there are always horses in the parade.

"I love the horses. That's why I come," she said.

The gray skies held off till half-way through the parade then let loose with heavy rain showers.
