Fun awaits returning students in Epping

EPPING — Students at Epping Elementary School will have a reason to celebrate when the doors open today.

Kids will find a new school playground to enjoy when the bells rings for recess.

“It’s going to be the playground of the area that people are going to come over and use. It’s probably better than anything I’ve seen at schools in the area,” said Dave Mylott, school board chairman.

The playground face-lift was aimed at addressing safety concerns with the old equipment and enhancing the playground experience for students and children in the community.

A ceremony marking the opening of the new playground will be held from 7:30 to 8 a.m. on the first day of school on Tuesday.

Gov. Maggie Hassan is expected to attend the playground opening.

The playground equipment and installation cost $181,246. Martha Williamson, the school district’s business manager, said $130,528 of that came from impact fees; the balance of $50,718 came from donations from N.H. Charitable Trust ($37,200); Epping Youth Athletic Association ($5,000); Epping Elementary PTO ($6,518); the Adam McPhee Memorial Fund ($1,000); and the Munsey Memorial Fund ($1,000).

Williamson said many community members and businesses also contributed time, equipment and materials toward prepping and finishing the project.

Mylott said the playground equipment includes a zip line. The company that put in the swing set said it was longest one workers have installed in New England, according to Mylott.

“There’s so much, and it’s way different than what they had before,” he said.

The playground opening event will be followed by the annual “First Day of School Celebration” for students in grades one through five.

The school has invited parents, guardians and relatives of the students to join the kids and their teachers and school staff for the celebration designed to bring the school and community together.

The school will open its doors for parents and children at 8 a.m.

Representatives from the school, town and local organizations that provide services to kids will be on hand for the event in the school’s cafeteria.

The first day celebration is supported by the Epping School District, Epping Parent-Teacher Organization and more than 60 businesses and individuals who donate money, supplies and services. The donations also provide every student and staff member with a school T-shirt printed with the name and logo of the Epping Eagles. jschreiber@newstote.com
