Police say Somersworth man tried to rob ATM user in Rollinsford

ROLLINSFORD — Police arrested a Somersworth man who they say attempted to take cash from an ATM user at TD Bank Monday. Police say his original intention was to rob the bank, but it was closed for the Labor Day holiday.

Eric W. Rouleau, 33, of Prospect Street, Somersworth, was charged with robbery after police said he walked up to a bank customer who was using the driveup automated teller machine around 12:54 p.m. and attempted to take cash.

According to police, Rouleau planned to rob the bank at 29 Weeks Lane but found it closed. As a result, Rouleau then "set his sights" on the customer using the ATM, police said. Rouleau attempted to grab the cash but fled without any money, according to police.

With the help of Somersworth police, Rouleau was apprehended at Wentworth-Douglas Hospital in Dover around 9:30 p.m.

"He was at the hospital for an unrelated matter," Police Chief Robert Ducharme said.

Rouleau was being held at Strafford County Jail in Dover on $5,000 cash bail after his arrest. He entered no plea during his arraignment in 7th Circuit Court, Dover District Division, Tuesday morning. Bail was increased to $25,000 cash with the conditions he have no contact with the victim and remain 500 feet away from the TD Bank, if released, according to court records.

Rouleau is scheduled to appear at a probable cause hearing Sept. 13 at 10 a.m. in Dover District Court.
