TAMWORTH - The owners of a New Hampshire campground that took a direct lightning strike say a teenager who was sent to the hospital has been released and is headed home.
The strike hit at Tamworth Camping Area around 8 p.m. Sunday. Owner Laurie Bonica says there was no sign of an imminent storm when lightning split a tree in the Lakes Region campground.
"It came out of nowhere. It wasn't raining. We heard very faint thunder in the distance but were barely aware of it, then there was one loud crack," she said. "It was really loud and you could feel vibration from it."
Bonica said the lightning cracked a tree and the electricity from the strike was felt a good distance away. She said a 14-year-old boy who had a hand on a camper was taken to the hospital overnight for precautions. She said the teen returned Monday morning and the family packed up and went home.
