The scoop — golf

New names: Bow's Doug Champagne, who won the Concord Country Club men's championship earlier this month, and teammate Colin Plumb are a couple of the new names to watch in NHIAA golf this year. They are among several freshmen who are likely to make an immediate impact on their teams and the state tournaments. Brandon Gillis at Nashua North, Tom Ethier at Bishop Guertin of Nashua, James McKee at Windham and Corey McGinley at Derryfield of Manchester are just a few of the others.

Tournaments: They arrive in short order: The team championships are decided on Thursday, Oct. 10 and the boys' individual titles on Saturday, Oct. 12. The Division I boys are at Canterbury Woods, Division II is at Beaver Meadow in Concord and Division III at Ridgewood in Moultonborough. The girls' individual championships are on Oct. 5 at Campbell's Scottish Highlands.

Early tests: Bedford coach Joel St. Laurent and the rest of Division I will get an early indicator of where things stand: The Bulldogs open the season today at Keene in a match that also includes Bishop Guertin and Merrimack ... Division III offers quite a season preview out of the gate as well with Bow, Mascenic of New Ipswich, Pelham and Kearsarge Regional of North Sutton meeting at the Country Club of New Hampshire in Sutton today ... The big Division II showdown is Hanover at Windham with Bishop Brady of Concord on Sept. 11.
