NH Senate spokeswoman will become court system's public information officer

CONCORD — The state Senate spokeswoman will become the new court system's public information officer next month.

Carole Alfano of Exeter was named to the court post Tuesday, succeeding Laura Kiernan, who founded the court's public information office in 2001 and is retiring.

Alfano has been the Senate communications director twice, including the past three years under Senate President Peter Bragdon, who will step down next month.

Bragdon became Local Government Center executive director earlier this month and said he would leave the Senate presidency to avoid any appearance of conflict of interest.

"Carole's media background and her enthusiasm for communications have been tremendous assets to the Senate," Bragdon said in a statement. "I know how much our senators have enjoyed working with her, particularly because she is so reliable and always kept the best interests of all our senators in mind."

Alfano is a Syracuse University College of Law graduate and was a legal fellow at the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press in Washington, D.C.

She was a producer for WMUR and New Hampshire Public Television and worked for the state Senate in 1998 and from 2001 to 2005.

"While we will miss Laura Kiernan's invaluable service to the New Hampshire judicial branch, we are confident that Carole Alfano is more than capable of taking over the responsibilities of the public information office, and we are pleased that she has agreed to join us and to assist the branch in its public communication and outreach efforts," Chief Justice Linda Stewart Dalianis said.

Alfano will join the judicial branch in mid-September.
