School board approves extra funding for chorus trip
SALEM — The Salem High School Chorus will be getting a little extra help from the school district when it’s time to travel to Carnegie Hall in New York City for a three-day music festival next April.
The school board unanimously approved the use of $3,300 from the district’s supply budget to help pay for the transportation costs for the trip.
The chorus was invited to participate in the festival earlier this year.
Between 40 and 60 students are expected to take part in the trip, at a cost of between $1,200 and $1,400 per student, according to chorus director Ellen Bosch.
The $3,300 will supplement the fundraising the chorus members plan to do during the school year, Bosch said. In addition, the school’s parents chorus group has pledged $6,000 to help offset the cost of the trip, according to Superintendent Michael Delahanty.
“It’s unusual for us to fund transportation for such a trip, but given the nature of this particular trip and the significance of performing at Carnegie Hall, and because it is a prestigious opportunity for our kids, we are recommending that we use not only the $1,400 budgeted for chorus travel, but that we find money, particularly with the supplies account at the high school,” said Delahanty.
Delahanty said the money would help the students participating minimize their personal expenses.
“I think this particular kind of trip is a feather in the district’s cap,” he said. “Having our chorus perform at Carnegie Hall is a significant opportunity and warrants additional financial support.”
Bosch said the time at Carnegie Hall itself costs $750 per student. The festival will include professional musicians and singers, as well as three days of rehearsals at the legendary concert venue.
“It is very prestigious to get accepted to this, but of course there are costs,” said Bosch.
School board member Peter Morgan asked if the additional money from the district was necessary or if it was a back-up plan in case the fundraising efforts fell short.
Bosch said the chorus needed the commitment of $3,300 for transportation costs from the district.
