2,600 to compete in Gilford's Timberman Ironman triathlon

GILFORD — Coming back for its 13th year, the Ironman 70.3 Timberman triathlon returns this weekend near Ellacoya State Park on Sunday.

The weekend-long nationally run event, organized and run by the for-profit World Triathlon Corporation, commences with a sprint triathlon and kids fun run on Saturday, and concludes with the Ironman 70.3 triathlon itself on Sunday.

This year’s event, known as a half-ironman race with 70.3 total miles of swimming, biking, and running, is sold out with 2,600 people competing, Ironman officials said.

The triathlon was first brought to Gilford in 2000, “as a way to bring something healthy to the community,” according to the Ironman 70.3 website. The first year, the event had 600 people between the sprint and the 70.3 event.

The race employs two courses, the half-ironman and the sprint triathlon. The half-ironman is a swim of 1½ miles, biking for 56 miles and a 13.1-mile run. The triathlon is a one-third-mile swim, a 15-mile bike, and a 3-mile run.

Once again the New Hampshire chapter of the Make-A-Wish Foundation will be competing in the race.

Andy Potts is coming into New Hampshire after a brief recovery from his second consecutive win at Ironman Lake Placid in July. The former Olympian is a potential favorite for the race.

Both today’s and Sunday’s events begin at 9 a.m.
