Derry opens up EMT recertification

DERRY — The Town Council has approved a plan that could help the fire department pay for its emergency medical technician recertification process.

Through December, department Emergency Services Director Charles Hemeon will provide the training for Derry firefighters. However, the council will allow people from outside the department to take the course for a $250 fee to help offset the cost of course materials.

“The Derry Fire Department is in the process of recertifying our EMTs to a higher level from intermediate to advanced EMTs,” said Fire Chief George Klauber. “This conversion course is required by the state.”

Hemeon said there is room for about two additional outside people in each of the four classes he will be leading through the end of the year.

“We have to put an outside limit of no more than eight people, with two additional people on each shift because of the size of the classroom and so that we give proper attention to our own students,” said Klauber. The class is being held at the department’s training facility at the Hampstead Road fire station.

The chief said the class has been approved by the state’s emergency services bureau and has been posted on the bureau’s website.

“We have gotten some phone calls from a few individuals asking to take part, and we thought it would be appropriate to have some fees to offset the costs,” said Klauber. “It’s not a phenomenal amount of money, but it would help to offset some of the cost for materials.”

Because Hemeon is already an employee of the department, Klauber said the only additional cost for the department is about $1,500 for books and materials.

“Between now and Dec. 16, all shifts will be taking the course and will be prepared to be advanced Emergency Medical Technicians,” said Klauber.

The council unanimously approved charging a fee for non-department personnel.
