BOSTON (Reuters) - The son of a former Boston Red Sox player and broadcaster was charged on Friday with stabbing his girlfriend to death in their apartment outside Boston, the local prosecutor said.
Police were called on Thursday night to the apartment where Jared Remy, 34, his girlfriend Jennifer Martel and their daughter lived in the suburb of Waltham, Mass., Middlesex County District Attorney Marian Ryan said.
“Ms. Martel had sustained multiple stab wounds,” Ryan told reporters. “We immediately began an investigation.”
Remy, the son of former Red Sox player Jerry Remy, pleaded not guilty at Waltham District Court on Friday to charges of murder, assault and battery in a domestic situation and assault with a dangerous weapon, a court official said.
Remy had been arrested and released on Wednesday after police were called to the apartment for a domestic disturbance call, Ryan said.
Jerry Remy played for the Red Sox from 1978 to 1984. He is currently a Red Sox broadcaster.
An associate of Remy’s said in a statement posted on Remy’s official Twitter feed: “It’s difficult to comment after the news this AM. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Martel family.”
