Moms create website to connect caregivers

Having faced the isolation that can come with becoming a mother, a New Hampshire native and her two business partners have created a website to connect mothers with other mothers. Meg Gerritson, a Massachusetts resident who grew up in Hooksett, along with Christa Terry, also from Massachusetts, and Julia High of Washington developed MomMeetMom.com, an online social platform that connects mothers and caregivers with one another on a local level.
“We just launched nationally, and while we already have a couple thousand users, we have a very healthy growth rate and are expanding by hundreds of users a week,” Gerrtison said.
Terry said the impetus for the website was that the trio, all mothers, experienced the isolation that having a child can create.
“I had my son in 2011, and I realized really fast, that while I still have a lot of friends, many of them don’t have kids, and I felt it important to meet other moms, but it was very challenging,” Gerritson said. “After wondering for a while how to approach it, I thought, wow it wouldn’t it be cool if you could just plug in a zip code and find other moms?” Terry said the entire purpose of the website is to help moms connect with someone who understands what they are experiencing.
The website went national on July 29 after undergoing beta testing in the Boston area for several months. Gerritson said it quickly became popular, and that without trying to expand, the founders noticed that moms from around the country were signing up. The trio are financing the site themselves.
The mom matches are made much like a dating website, only with a custom-created program that will match caregivers based upon characteristics such as schedule, religion, lifestyle, family size and age.
“The website will be free to sign up, and it always will be. We will make money from advertising. We are not as concerned about the monetary piece as we are helping and appealing to mothers. Based on the business model we are pursuing we will not have to charge people,” Gerritson said.
She said that since mothers are one of the most sought-after demographics, it won’t be hard to find companies interested in advertising on the site. Currently the company is showing the most growth in urban areas.
Gerritson said a key piece to the business is the feedback from users.
Both Terry and Gerritson agreed that a big part of the trio’s initial success comes from getting along on both a professional and personal level.
Gerritson said the trio had all arrived at the same conclusion of how to bring mothers together independently, and after finding one another online, decided to scrap their independent projects and start working together.
“It was awkward at first, but it ended up being the best possible thing,” Gerritson said.
