When the 113th U.S. Amateur Championship started on Monday, Chelso Barrett was in a field of 312 players.

Thursday, he departed Brookline, Mass., as one of the top 16 amateur golfers in the nation.

Barrett, of Surry, eliminated Justin Shin of British Columbia, 4 and 3, in the round of 32 Thursday morning, but was ousted in the round of 16 by Adam Ball of Richmond, Va., 6 and 5, during their afternoon match.

There is no shame in losing to an opponent like Ball, currently playing for Virginia Commonwealth University.

Ball is a three-time Virginia Golf Association Junior Golfer of the Year and was ranked as high as No. 2 nationally in the Golfweek U.S. Junior Rankings in 2011 when he won seven major tournaments and finished runner-up five times that season.

Barrett just couldn’t get on track in his afternoon match against Ball.

He bogeyed holes 2, 4 and 5 to quickly fall two holes back and lost hole 6 when Ball converted a birdie on the par-4 hole.

Ball’s lead swelled to 4-up when he also birdied the par-3 seventh hole.

Barrett won hole 9 when Ball double bogeyed the hole, but Barrett gave it back on hole 10 with a bogey. Ball’s lead went to 5-up when Barrett double-bogeyed hole 11 and the match ended on hole 13 when Barrett bogeyed again.

Barrett was six-over-par in that match with five bogeys, one double bogey, one birdie and six pars.

In the morning match win against Shin, Barrett captured four consecutive holes on the front nine for a 4-up lead after eight holes. He won holes 5 (par), 6 (birdie), 7 (par) and 8 (par) and held a 3-up lead after 10 holes.

He restored his 4-up lead with a par on hole 11 and despite scoring a bogey on holes 13 and 14, Shin couldn’t capitalize.

Shin finished his match with a seven-over-par. Barrett with two birdies, four bogeys, one double bogey and eight pars, ended up carding a 4-over-par score.

Barrett, who won the New Hampshire Golf Association Stroke Play championship to start the month, now heads off to begin his collegiate career at Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, Texas.
