Schimpf leads Fisher Cats past New Britain


 

Ryan Schimpf highlighted a five-run, seventh inning rally with a three-run homer, his 20th of the season, to lead the New Hampshire Fisher Cats to a 9-3 Eastern League win against the host Rock Cats at New Britain Stadium Thursday.

New Hampshire (59-63) returns home Friday to open a brief three-game series against Trenton, which is in second place in the Eastern Division.

The Fisher Cats started Thursday's game six games behind Trenton in the loss column for the second and final playoff berth in the division.

Gabe Jacobo collected four hits for New Hampshire which banged out 16 hits. Nashua native Kevin Nolan and A.J. Jimenez (four RBIs) each had three hits.

New Hampshire took a 1-0 second inning lead when Jimenez doubled home Nolan. Andy Burns padded the lead to 2-0 in the next inning with his seventh season homer.

Jimenez made it 4-0 with a two-run double in the sixth inning before the Fisher Cats exploded for five more in the seventh frame.

In the seventh Jacobo and Jimenez each had an RBI hit before Schimpf delivered his three-run homer to right for a 9-0 lead.

Chorye Spoone (4-3) was the winning pitcher for the Fisher Cats.
