Swamp Bats win NECBL title

Matt Ford collected three hits including a three-run double to lead the Keene Swamp Bats past the Newport Gulls 7-1 for the 2013 New England Collegiate Baseball League championship title before 3,177 fans Wednesday in Newport, R.I.

It was the Swamp Bats’ fourth league title and second in the last three years.

Ford gave Keene the momentum when his double plated Ryan Lukach (walk), Dylan Moore (reached on an error) and Zach Lucas (walk) for the early 3-0 second inning lead. Zach Lauricella drilled a solo homer in the third inning for a 4-1 lead.Keene padded the advantage to 6-1 in the fourth inning on a two-run single from J.P. Sportman. Lauricella capped the scoring in the sixth frame with an RBI single.Keene used four pitchers in the game and Nathan Kirby, who pitched the third, fourth and fifth innings got the mound win. He allowed one hit, walked three and fanned three.
