Mount Washington Hillclimb is Saturday

More than 600 riders are expected to compete in the 41st annual Mount Washington Auto Road Bicycle Hillclimb on Saturday beginning at 8:30 a.m. in Pinkham Notch.

The 7.6-mile Mount Washington Auto Road, which climbs 4,618-feet to a finish line 6,288-feet above sea level, is a grueling challenge to all competitors.

The race will serve as the primary fund-raising event for the Tin Mountain Conservation Center in Albany.

Cameron Cogburn of Cambridge, Mass., was the overall winner last year in 52:28, finishing ahead of runner-up Cogburn is entered in Saturday’s race, as well.

Leroy Popowski of Colorado Springs, Colo., in 53:47. Placing third was Peter Hurst of Norwalk, Conn., in 54:03.

The top New Hampshire finisher last summer was Chad Young of Newmarket. He pedaled into eighth place in a time of 1:00:02.

Former Manchester Memorial and Boston University standout Marti Shea, now residing in Marblehead, Mass., was the top female winner last summer in 1:03:14. The 50-year-old Shea will not compete Saturday, as she is coaching and leading vacation tours in Europe.

Placing ninth and 10th respectively last year were Jeannie Allyson (1:23:24) of Durham and Cynthia Coffin (1:24:13) of Center Harbor.

A cash prize of $1,500 will be awarded to the first male and female cyclists.

The youngest rider entered Saturday is 11-year-old Maria Goodwin of Madison.
