FREMONT — A 57-year-old woman vacationing from the Dominican Republic was killed in an all-terrain vehicle crash Thursday night on a section of a popular trail.
The accident was reported around 7:30 p.m. on the Rockingham Recreational Trail off South Road. The crash occurred about 300 feet up the trail when the four-wheeler the victim was riding on struck a tree and hit a stone embankment, Fremont Police Sgt. Jason Larochelle said.
The woman was a passenger on the vehicle, which was being operated by a 23-year-old man from Methuen, Mass.
The two were in a group of ATV riders. Larochelle said the ATV driver was experienced and familiar with the trail.
The cause of the accident remains under investigation by Fish and Game officials. Larochelle said speed may have been a factor.
The operator suffered minor injuries and was taken to Exeter Hospital.
All involved were wearing helmets, Larochelle said.
Authorities have not released the names of the victim or the ATV operator.
