Lynch tapped for USNH board of trustees

PLYMOUTH — Former Gov. John Lynch was not gone from public service for long.

Gov. Maggie Hassan nominated Lynch to the University System of New Hampshire Board of Trustees Wednesday at the Governor and Executive Council meeting.

Before being elected governor in 2004, Lynch served on the university system board for four years and was its chairman when he resigned to seek the Democratic gubernatorial nomination.

Lynch is a 1974 graduate of the University of New Hampshire and the former president of the UNH Alumni Association.
He runs a consulting firm, teaches at Dartmouth College and serves on the board of several New Hampshire-based companies.

Lynch could not be reached for comment.

The former governor would replace former Senate President Edward Dupont on the board. Dupont was a trustee for 10 years and served as chairman for several terms.
Hassan also nominated James Craig of Manchester for a full term as labor commissioner.

Craig, who was a former House minority leader, would fill the term of George Copadis of Manchester, who was named Department of Employment Security commissioner last year.
The Executive Council is expected to vote on the confirmations of Lynch and Craig at its Sept. 4 meeting in Durham.

The council accepted the resignation of Superior Court Judge John Lewis, who will retire three years before the mandatory retirement age of 70.
Lewis said after 12 years, it is time to retire and move on to other pursuits.

He was named as superior court justice by former Gov. Jeanne Shaheen in 2001.
