PORTSMOUTH — In June 1867, the crack baseball club of New England, the Lowell Base Ball Nine of Boston, came to Portsmouth, N.H., and handily defeated the one-year-old Portsmouth Rockingham Club.

Now fast forward to Saturday.

"We shall see if history will repeat itself as the current version of the Portsmouth Rockinghams takes on the current version of Lowell Base Ball Nine at Leary Field at 12 p.m.,” said Essex Base Ball Association’s Brian Sheehy .

He said prior to the game at the field at Rockland Street and Sherburne Avenue, the clubs will offer a kids clinic in which members will show youngsters the old equipment and allow them a few swings. Along with the games, author Ed Achorn will be on hand signing copies of his baseball books “59 in 84” and “The Summer of Beer & Whiskey.”

After the games, members of the clubs will be doing a meet and greet at the Rusty Hammer, 49 Pleasant St.

Both clubs are members of the five-team Essex Base Ball Organization, a nonprofit group that recreates the game of baseball as it was played in the 1860s.

The game is sponsored by the nonprofit membership museum and library the Portsmouth Athenaeum, Sam Adams, and the Rusty Hammer.
