SALEM — A Salem stay-at-home mom didn’t have to venture too far when it came to filming her entry for a national video contest.

Having her 5-year-old daughter, Chloe Brotherton, star in the film was a no-brainer for Sara Friedrich, who learned about the New Hampshire Lakes Region Tourism Association’s “What Would You Do for a Vacation in the Lakes Region?” national video contest via the organization’s Facebook page.

“She’s very theatrical, so we’d planned to have her whistle while jumping on our trampoline,” Friedrich said.

But as it turns out, the perfect moment arrived at random.

“We were at a Fourth of July cookout and the kids were playing in the pool,” Friedrich said. “I said, ‘this is it.’”

During the one-minute video titled “Penguin Slide,” Chloe sits by the pool in a black inner tube and convinces her uncle to make a splash down the water slide from atop her penguin float.

The contest ran for the month of July, with people asked to submit their short, homemade videos online. Dozens of videos were posted on the Lakes Association’s website, with winners determined by viewers’ votes.

Friedrich’s video took first place, earning her family a weeklong stay in the New Hampshire Lakes region, complete with lodging at the Fireside Inn, Steele Hill Resort and RDC Squam Resort, meals at the Weathervane and Common Man restaurants and passes to nearby attractions like Castle in the Clouds, Squam Science Center and the Polar Caves.

Joining Chloe on the trip along with her mother are brother Gavin Brotherton, 8 months, and father Ryan Brotherton.

Chloe was reportedly quite excited about her role in the winning video.

“She keeps jumping up and down screaming ‘we won, we won!’” her mother said with a laugh. “This is huge for our family, because being a stay-at home mother we don’t have the chance to go away very often.”

The plan is to head north before summer ends, as Chloe will begin kindergarten at Barron Elementary School soon.

Earning second place in the contest was Indiana resident Scott Spurlock, who shaved off the beard he’s had since high school for a chance at winning a free vacation.

His efforts earned him passes to Gunstock Resort’s Aerial Park and a gift certificate to Patrick’s Pub. Illinois resident Mathurshan Vimalesvaran’s video earned the third place prize — four M/S Mount Washington passes and a gift certificate to T-Bones Great American Eatery.
