Fisher Cats fall in 13-inning marathon

MANCHESTER - In a tightly pitched contest that featured extended work for each team's bullpen, the Fisher Cats dropped a thirteen-inning marathon to the Richmond Flying Squirrels, 7-2, on Saturday night. Richmond used three walks, a single, and a grand slam in the game-winning rally to even the series and set up the rubber game on Sunday.

Richmond got on the board first, plating a run in the fourth against starter Marcus Walden. With one out, the Squirrels put runners at first and second before Juan Ciriaco singled in a run for a 1-0 lead.

The Fisher Cats answered back an inning later to tie the game at 1-1. Lance Zawadzki and John Tolisano singled to put men at the corners. After a line drive resulted in a double play, Andy Burns doubled to left to score Zawadzki and tie the game.

That was all that either starter allowed. Walden pitched six innings giving up a run on five hits with two walks and three strikeouts. Richmond's Taylor Rogers went five frames surrendering four hits while avoiding most of the potential damage incurred by three walks.

Randy Boone followed Walden out of the Fisher Cats bullpen with three scoreless innings in relief. He struck out three while issuing one walk and one hit. Boone has not allowed a run since the all-star break, a span of twenty consecutive scoreless innings. He has allowed just 11 hits and five walks with 20 Ks during that run.

Both bullpens carried the torch to keep it 1-1 until the 12th inning. Richmond grabbed a run in the top of the inning against Dustin Antolin with a walk, sacrifice, and an RBI single from Joe Panik. New Hampshire answered in the bottom of the inning when Adam Loewen dropped a single between three fielders to plate pinch-hitter Kevin Ahrens to make it 2-2.

In the 13th, the Squirrels put the game away. Antolin issued a lead-off walk before recording a pair of outs. That's when he ran into trouble issuing two more walks to load the bases. Panik then followed with the go-ahead single for another run and a 3-2 lead. Javier Herrera put the game out of reach with a grand slam to right-center field.

The series and the homestand come to an end on Sunday at 3:05 p.m. Sunday's pitching match-up will feature Marcus Stroman (6-3, 2.93) against Richmond lefty Jack Snodgrass (9-4, 3.61).
