Claremont Community Center to close for maintenance

CLAREMONT — The recently opened Claremont Savings Bank Community Center plans to close for a few days this month for important routine maintenance and preventative care, Parks and Recreation Director Scott Hausler said.

The work will take place over a three-day period, starting Saturday, Aug. 24. The community center will reopen Tuesday, Aug. 27, with regular hours.

Over the three days the facility will be cleaned, including all windows, filters replaced and equipment maintained according to the manufacturer's recommendations, Hausler said.

"You can't have the ladders and lifts and buffers that you want to get out with families and kids running around," he said.

The most intensive work to be completed is the removal of carpeting near the locker rooms. It will be replaced with tiles to prevent possible moisture problems.

Since opening in March, the center has seen more than 53,000 visitors, Hausler said, and exceeded its membership goals of between 900 and 1,000 membership units sold, by selling 1,868 individual, senior and family membership units, which equates to 3,936 members.

The $10 million center includes an eight-lane, 25-yard pool, exercise pool and gymnasium, elevated walking and jogging track and cardio fitness and game room as well as a function hall.

It is typical that a facility such as this would close for an entire week each year to perform maintenance and cleaning, Hausler said. But since there doesn't seem to be a good "down time" in the year it was decided the center would close twice a year for a few days, Hausler said.

The community can expect another maintenance closing in six months, he said.

The center will close Saturday, Aug. 24, at 4 p.m. instead of the regular Saturday closing time of 8 p.m.

The community center is to remain closed on Sunday, when it is usually open from noon to 4 p.m.

The work will continue on Monday, Aug. 26, when the center is to be closed all day, when it would usually be open from 5:30 a.m. to 9 p.m.

The community center will reopen Tuesday, Aug. 27, with regular hours.
