NH Guard is good news: Hassan’s recent trip shows why

The Union Leader went along with Gov. Maggie Hassan on a recent trip to inspect Air and Army National Guard units. That is a good use of the governor’s time. She is, after all, commander in chief of the New Hampshire Guard.

And it is also a good thing for this newspaper to be able to tell the Guard story to our readers.

The trip was a reminder of how much the nation relies on the Guard these days and of how professional and up to the task the New Hampshire Guard is.

State Adjutant General William Riddell ticked off with pride the rankings that New Hampshire units have attained. In several important categories, they exceed national standards for quality and response times by a country mile.

That speaks well of the caliber of men and women currently in the Guard. Many are young people. They are unfailingly polite and exhibit a can-do attitude that is refreshing. If some examples of young Americans today are depressing, the examples in the Guard tell a much more uplifting story.

The Guard also brings a variety of skills and experience from civilian life that is invaluable in doing much of what today’s military is called upon to do for the nation.

New Hampshire is lucky to have the Guard. Those businesses that support employees’ participation are also to be saluted and encouraged.
