Concord man treated for accidental gunshot wound

CONCORD – A 73-year-old man suffered a gunshot wound to the leg Tuesday morning when he was trying to unload a .45 caliber handgun and it went off, according to police.

Police and fire officials had to force their way into the man's home on Peterson Circle after he was unable to make it to the door to let them inside.

The man, whose name and address were not released by police, was transported to Concord Hospital for treatment of the injury described by police as not life-threatening.

When officers arrived at the home, they said they could hear the man calling out to them.

Once inside, they found him sitting on a bed in a second-floor bedroom, bleeding from his left leg. Police said he tried to unload the gun when he accidentally shot himself. The gun was on the night stand.

No one else was home at the time of the incident, and police do not suspect foul play.

The man is not expected to face any charges.
