JAFFREY — High school student MacKenzie West is one of 50 local artists featured in the 'Mirror Mirror on the Wall' fundraiser auction to be held for the Monadnock Community Early Learning Center Sunday.

The 50 artists were each asked to donate their talent by adorning the frame of a 20-inch by 20-inch mirror to be auctioned off to raise money for the non-profit center for children aged 6 weeks to 12 years.

West, 16-year-old ConVal High School student from Francestown, said she turned to art mentors Jessie Pollack of Peterborough and Earl Schofield of Antrim for guidance when she was asked to be one of the artists.

"I was approached by a committee member and I was delighted to participate," West said.

Honored, West accepted.

"I just think it's an incredible opportunity. … It feels really good. I just wanted to share a little piece of me and also make something beautiful and help a good cause at the same time."

To create her piece, West used encaustic techniques she learned from Pollock and Schofield. Encaustic is a technique that bridges sculpture, painting and collage, she said. It's a versatile and amazing form of art that few artists attempt, she said.

West sells her art at farmers markets and art fairs and is planning to study art in college.

"I have been interested in art my whole life and it's my passion and it's my future," she said.

The auction is Sunday at the Shattuck Country Club in Jaffrey, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Bidding begins at $50 per mirror. Auction tickets are $30 per person or $50 per couple.

All proceeds from the event are to support the children and families of the Monadnock Community Early Learning Center in Peterborough.
