Astros rookie handcuffs Red Sox

Astros rookie Brett Oberholtzer dominated through seven innings and Houston used some small ball to knock off visiting Boston, 2-0, Monday night.

Oberholtzer (2-0) struck out two while walking two and scattering four hits in his second career start. The left-hander has not allowed a run over 14 innings for the Astros, who snapped a four-game slide.

John Lackey (7-9) struck out 10 but was charged with two runs on eight hits in six innings as the first-place Red Sox had their lead over the Tampa Bay Rays in the American League East trimmed to one-half game.

Houston stole six bases and executed a suicide squeeze in the contest. L.J. Hoes singled and swiped second in the fifth before scoring the opening run on Robbie Grossman's single to right field.

Notes: The Red Sox recalled RHP Brandon Workman from Triple-A Pawtucket and placed OF Daniel Nava on paternity leave. ... Boston RHP Clay Buchholz (shoulder) is expected to throw off a mound today for the first time since before the All-Star break.
