Trial date set for former Portsmouth school district worker charged with sex assault

BRENTWOOD – A trial date has been set for a former Portsmouth school department worker facing charges that he tried to sexually assault a 14-year-old girl.

A judge set a Sept. 23 trial date for Kenneth Kimber, 34, after prosecutors made a plea offer on charges that he tried to lure the girl to his apartment, according to court documents.

He allegedly lured the girl to his apartment on Feb. 3, communicating with her through Facebook, prosecutors said.

Kimber, who is being held on bail pending trial, is facing a single count of attempted felonious sexual assault.

Kimber sent the girl a photo of genitals and a sexually explicit message through the social networking site, according to an indictment. He then picked up the girl at her home and drove her to his apartment, police said.

Prosecutors indicated in court papers that they plan on using a computer expert at the trial, which is expected to last three to five days.

Kimber worked for the Portsmouth school district's information technology department and coached a boy's basketball team at Noble High School in Berwick, Maine, at the time of his arrest. He was fired from both jobs in the wake of being charged by police.
Kimber is also facing nine counts of stalking in a related case for allegedly calling a woman while he was being held at the county jail, according to prosecutors.

Prosecutors said Kimber called a woman from the county jail between March 24 and April 8 in defiance of a judge's order. A court order prohibited Kimber from having contact with the woman, who is a witness in his case, according to prosecutors.

An anonymous tip to police first set off the investigation. Kimber was briefly freed on bail after his arrest in the sex assault case. Judge Marguerite Wageling ordered Kimber back to jail on a higher bail in April after he was charged in the stalking case.
