Bad call on bail: Get treatment, but in jail

The Manchester man charged with walking up to a stranger's car and shooting a passenger inside may indeed be in need of psychiatric treatment, but it ought not be at the expense of more innocent victims. A Manchester court judge should rethink his order of last week that greatly reduced the bail for Thomas Landry.

Judge Gregory Michael reduced Landry's bail so that he can be treated through the Veterans Administration for traumatic brain injury allegedly suffered during military service.

We don't argue with providing treatment for the accused, especially if he is a veteran. But given the outrageous circumstances of the alleged crime, the treatment needs to be either brought to the man's jail cell or delayed until the charges are resolved.

As city prosecutor Gregory Mueller recounted, this was an "incredibly violent act." Landry had been drinking, according to the prosecutor, and he has a previous criminal conviction for aggravated driving while intoxicated. See a pattern here? If he drinks again there is the potential for more violence, perhaps death to innocent victims.

The judge has put Landry under house arrest.

He can only leave home for treatment. But what is to stop him from drinking at home and then committing another "incredibly violenct act?"

We are surprised Judge Michael is letting the people of Manchester take that chance. He should rethink it.
