'Round Goffstown: No village traffic lights

August 01. 2013 11:34PM

Traffic can be a bear in Goffstown. What? Goffstown? Yes, and the town is studying what to do about it. Thankfully, it looks as though traffic lights are low on the list of options.

At a public forum this week, residents were presented with three options for improving the traffic flow through Goffstown Village. The problems are the multi-point intersections at Elm, High and Main streets and at Mast Road and Pleasant and Main.

One option would be for full roundabouts at the intersections. But those are costly, and one would require the relocation of the Goffstown Public Library. Another is for mini roundabouts, and the final would be the installation of traffic lights.

At the forum, traffic lights seemed to have the lowest level of support. Whew. Traffic lights at those intersections would do more than change the old-fashioned feel of the village. They would needlessly cause stop-and-start driving at all times. As it is, one can regularly drive through the village uninterrupted if traffic is light.

The best of the three options would be the mini roundabouts. They would improve the traffic flow while keeping the old village charm.
