Drew single in 15th lifts Red Sox over Mariners, into 1st place

BOSTON -- Stephen Drew singled down the right-field line with two outs in the 15th inning to lift host Boston back into first place in the team's longest game of the year.

Drew's line drive off Lucas Luetge (0-2) plated Dustin Pedroia from third base to give the Red Sox their major league-leading 10th walk-off victory of the season. Drake Britton (1-0) pitched two scoreless innings to earn his first major-league win as the Red Sox moved a half-game in front of Tampa Bay atop the American League East.

Boston also received a pair of defensive gems in extra innings - a sliding catch by center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury in the 11th and a diving grab that Jonny Gomes turned into an unassisted inning-ending double play in the top of the 15th. Seattle center fielder Michael Saunders gunned down Brandon Snyder at the plate in the bottom of the 14th.

Pedroia belted a two-run homer and drove in three runs for the second straight night and Drew was one of four players with two hits as the Red Sox made it five straight wins over Seattle. Kyle Seager homered among his three hits and had two RBIs and Kendrys Morales added three hits for the Mariners.

Pedroia put Boston ahead in the seventh, crushing an offering from lefty reliever Oliver Perez over everything in left field for a 4-3 lead, but Seattle tied it in its next at-bat when Seager hammered a high fastball from Junichi Tazawa over the Red Sox bullpen in right-center.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Red Sox right-hander John Lackey allowed three runs on eight hits over seven innings while Mariners starter Hisashi Iwakuma went 5 2/3 innings and gave up two runs on seven hits. ... RHP Jake Peavy, acquired from the Chicago White Sox on Tuesday night, is expected to join the Red Sox on Thursday and will make his first start for Boston before the current homestand ends Sunday. Peavy, 32, will take the rotation slot of Brandon Workman, who will move to the bullpen. ... The Mariners traded 2B Robert Andino to the Pittsburgh Pirates for a player to be named later. Andino was demoted to Triple-A Tacoma in May after batting .184 in 29 games.
