SWANZEY — The Monadnock Humane Society will hold its second annual summer Cat-Splosion Adoption Event on Saturday.
During the one-day event, adult cats, over 6 months old, can be adopted for a reduced adoption fee of only $25.
The adoption fee for adult cats is usually $90, cats over 9 years are $50, and the kitten fee is $100. The kitten fee will remain the same Saturday.
"Summer is typically the busiest time in an animal shelter," said Stephanie Frommer, director of Shelter Operations.
June, July and August is when most animal shelters take in three-quarters of the animals they will take in over a year, she said.
With the warm weather comes an explosion in the cat population. It's a time of year in which pregnant cats and newborn kittens are filling the shelter, Frommer said.
"It's usually all about the kittens this time of year," she said. "We want to highlight the beauty of an adult."
During last year's Cat-Splosion 43 adult cats were adopted among other pet adoptions that day.
It was such a success, they reduced the adult cat fee during the December Home for the Holidays event last year and 54 were adopted.
"It's a great success when we do it. It usually does make a big impact for us, opening up some space, getting some very well deserving cats into some good homes," Frommer said.
The shelter is home to 165 cats. About 75 will be adoptable Saturday, she said.
Frommer said the event is not intended to encourage people to get a cat on the spur of the moment. This is a great event for people who have been thinking about getting a cat and are open to adopting a cat 6 months or older.
The "Cat-Splosion" Adoption Event is to be held at the Adoption and Learning Center at 101 West Swanzey Road, Swanzey, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.
The Humane Society is expecting a crowd, Frommer said.
"Bring a good sense of humor and some patience, cause we will be busy," Frommer said. "We will get as many cats out the door as we can if people will bear with us."
Refreshments will be served, and additional staff and volunteers will be on hand to help adopters find their ideal new pet.
All cats are spayed or neutered, are up to date on vaccines and have been treated for flea, mites and have been dewormed. Regular adoption fees will apply for kittens, dogs and small animals.
