Automobile fans revved up for annual car show

MERRIMACK — Car enthusiasts will be in automobile heaven this weekend as an estimated 800 unique vehicles will pack the grounds of the Anheuser-Busch Brewery. The 40th annual Show and Shine Car Show hosted by the East Coast Camaro Club will be held from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday.

“This is an amazing show with classics, antiques, trucks and motorcycles. You name it, we’ve got it,” said Michelle Jelley, chairperson of the club’s board. “There are a lot of interesting cars, so I would hate to highlight just one of the them.”

The event is typically well attended, with thousands of spectators walking the grounds to view the classic cars, said Jelley. It is one of the club’s largest shows of the year.

“This is a Make-A-Wish charity event, so all of the proceeds go directly to Make-A-Wish,” she said. The Make-A-Wish Foundation is a national non-profit organization that helps grant wishes to children with life-threatening illnesses.

According to Jelley, a $5 donation is requested for any vehicle participating in the show, and spectators are asked to donate $2 to attend the event.

Classic cars from all over New England are expected to be on display, and car owners do not need to register in advance. Some vehicles registered in California attended last year’s Show and Shine event, she said, adding many classic car owners participate in various car show circuits throughout the summer, traveling from one show to the next.

“People can bring their cars the day of the show, find a spot on the grass and park,” said Jelley. Vehicles often start arriving around 7 a.m., although the show doesn’t start until 8 a.m.Jelley said the brewery is an ideal location for the car show, as car enthusiasts may also take a free tour of the brewery to learn how the brewer makes its beers. The tour center is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday, and guests who are 21 or older may sample Anheuser-Busch premium beers. The featured beer, Bud Light, also will be available for free samples in the lobby. The brewery includes an opportunity to visit the Merrimack Hamlet, the Northeastern home of the world-famous Budweiser Clydesdales. The brewery gift shop will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday.

“We are expecting a good crowd. The cars each year are always different,” said Jelley.
