Reports: Red Sox to get Jake Peavy in 3-team trade

After days of speculation that Jake Peavy would be dealt, the Chicago White Sox finally traded the veteran right-hander late Tuesday night.

Peavy will end up with the Boston Red Sox as part of a three-team deal that includes the Detroit Tigers, multiple media outlets reported.

Chicago will receive outfielder Avisail Garcia from Detroit, and the Tigers will get infielder Jose Iglesias from the Red Sox. Right-handed reliever Brayan Villarreal will move from the Detroit organization to Boston.

Peavy will provide a solid fill-in for injured right-hander Clay Buchholz, though rookie Brandon Workman earned his first win for the Red Sox on Tuesday as a rotation fill-in.

The arrival of Iglesias gives Detroit a fall-back plan for the shortstop position in case Jhonny Peralta is suspended as part of Major League Baseball's investigation into the Biogenesis of America. Peralta is one of the players alleged to have received banned performance-enhancing substances from the now-closed South Florida clinic.

Peavy, 32, is 8-4 with a 4.28 ERA in 13 starts this year. He is owed $14.5 million for 2014 and has a vesting option for 2015.

Iglesias, 23, is batting .330 with one homer and 19 RBIs in 63 games. He has played third base and second base in addition to shortstop.

Garcia, 22, has a .241 average with two homers and 10 RBIs in 30 games for the Tigers this season. He has been up and down between the majors and Triple-A Toledo, for whom he was batting .374 after an 0-for-3 game Tuesday.

Villarreal, 26, went 0-2 with a 20.77 ERA in seven appearances for Detroit this year. He was 2-2 with one save and a 3.15 ERA in 28 games with Toledo.
