UPDATED: Top Boy Scouts executive leaving NH for Philadelphia
MANCHESTER — The top official for Boy Scouts of America in New Hampshire is leaving the Granite State to oversee one of the largest councils in the country.
Mike Kaufman, executive director and chief executive officer of the Daniel Webster Council since 2005, has been promoted to the top post of Philadelphia's Cradle of Liberty Council.
"It's got one of the longest and most rich traditions of high caliber, high quality programs in the country," Kaufman said Wednesday. "I was honored just to be asked by the committee to interview."
Kaufman learned Monday he got the job and is scheduled to begin Sept. 1.
The Cradle of Liberty Council includes Philadelphia itself and communities outside the city in Montgomery and Delaware counties. The council serves more than 17,000 youth. The Daniel Webster Council served 12,771 in 2012.
"There are a lot of things I'll miss from here in New Hampshire," Kaufman said. "There's a tremendous belief that the state has in our scouting programs and what good they do for our youth and society."
Kaufman thanked all the volunteers and dads who over the last eight years have taken time away from home for meetings, campouts and numerous other Scouting events, including the Service Credit Union Boston-Portsmouth Air Show.
The Daniel Webster Council was co-sponsor for the event the last three summers and featured the Navy Blue Angels twice and the Air Force Thunderbirds once. The council agreed to take a break from the endeavor this year, before sequestration cuts grounded the military air show fleets for the remainder of 2013.
Kaufman said the success of the shows is an example of the strength and participation of Scouting in the Granite State.
Kaufman's 25-year career in Scouting leadership has also included posts in Nashville, the Cincinnati area and Atlanta.
"This is a wonderful opportunity for Mike and I wish him the very best," Daniel Webster Council President Mark Primeau said in a release Wednesday. "His vision has enabled the Daniel Webster Council to do some very extraordinary things for the youth of New Hampshire. His work will leave an indelible mark on New Hampshire Scouting for years to come."
The New Hampshire council's executive board will form a committee in the next several weeks to start the search for Kaufman's successor.
