Manchester 14’s advance to N.E. Babe Ruth baseball final

Garret Olivar’s one-out sacrifice fly plated Joey Silva in the bottom of the seventh inning to lead the Manchester Mickey Hanagan All-Stars to a 5-4 semifinal victory Monday against Warwick, R.I., in the 14-year-old New England Babe Ruth Baseball Regional Tournament in Westfield, Mass.

Manchester will meet Waterford, Conn., in the regional championship game today at 3 p.m. at Bullens Field.

Waterford eliminated Norwood, Mass., 10-0 in five innings in the other semifinal game Monday behind a five-inning no-hitter from Jacob Gannon.

In the home seventh against Warwick in a 4-4 game, Manchester’s Silva launched a long fly ball over the rightfielder for a one-out triple. Olivar followed with his sacrifice fly to center, deep enough to score Silva for the winning run.

Manchester righthander Pat Swanson gained the complete-game win. He allowed six hits, five walks and fanned three batters. He also opened the tournament with a complete game three-hit win over Pittsfield, Mass.

Manchester trailed Warwick, 3-0, before striking for four runs in the fourth inning.

Swanson started the rally with a walk and advanced to third on a double from Nate Hall. Drew Merrick, who had three of his team’s six hits, lashed a two-run single down the left field line.

Johnny Robinson kept the inning alive with a one-out single, moving Merrick to second. That set the table for Nick Salcito, who delivered a two-run double to left centerfield for a 4-3 lead.

Warwick tied the game in the fifth inning, but Swanson allowed only one baserunner over the final two innings.

Matt Reynolds, who pitched a complete-game six-hit win against Norwood, Mass., in the second round-robin game, will get the starting nod for the Hanagans today against Waterford.
