Fisher Cats’ Van Kirk suspended

New Hampshire Fisher Cats outfielder Brian Van Kirk was suspended for 50 games by Major League Baseball on Monday.

The Commissioner’s Office suspended Van Kirk for violation of the Minor League Drug Prevention and Treatment Program. Van Kirk is a second-time offender, which resulted in the suspension being 50 games in length.

Van Kirk became the second Fisher Cats player in as many seasons to be suspended by the MLB. Pitcher Marcus Stroman also received a 50-game suspension for use of an ampthetamine during his time at Single-A Vancouver last season prior to his call-up to New Hampshire.

Van Kirk is hitting .278 through 70 games with New Hampshire this season with 29 RBIs, two home runs and 39 runs scored. The Fisher Cats were off Monday night and play at Bowie tonight at 7:05.

The Fisher Cats did not issue a statement on Van Kirk’s suspension, which was effective immediately, and referred all questions on the matter to the Commissioner’s Office and the parent club, the Toronto Blue Jays.
