Weare gets FEMA money to offset winter storm costs

WEARE — The town has secured federal funding to help offset the costs incurred when winter storm Nemo blew through New Hampshire in February.

According to Tim Redmond, director of public works and head of the highway department, Weare has received $47,095 from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to help offset the cost of overtime, material, equipment and vehicle use during the nor’easter. Nemo dumped more than two feet of snow on the area during its visit.

“The highway personnel did an outstanding job of cleanup following the storm,” he said.

Redmond said the storm damage suffered by the town in February, including downed trees and extensive plowing, resulted in a “large amount of extra duty for Highway Department personnel, more wear and tear on town equipment and an impact on the budget.”

Redmond said his decision to seek reimbursement from FEMA is part of his ongoing effort to keep the cost of maintaining the roads as low as possible, while maintaining safe passage for local citizens.

“The safety of the traveling public, and most importantly the residents of Weare, is one of my highest priorities,” he said.

Applying for the FEMA funds was a time-consuming effort, he said, but an important one to keep the bottom line of the budget reasonable to taxpayers.
