Riverfest serves as showcase for Jaffrey

JAFFREY — Musical chairs are serious business at Jaffrey Riverfest.

On Saturday, 100 contestants filled Main Street to play for the chance to win the $250 first-place prize money.

In the end it came down to brother and sister Sam Hill and Abigail DeRosier, both of Jaffrey.

DeRosier bested her brother.

For second place, Hill won a $100 Atlas Fireworks gift certificate. Third place went to Ruth Miner of New Orleans, who won an ice cream making machine.

Children 9 and under also competed for a $50 grand prize.

Though sporting a broken ankle, Gavin Swenson, 8, of Jaffrey, won the children's game of musical chairs. Helen Wagner of Houston, Texas, 9, came in second and Duncan Beauchamp, 8, of Jaffrey, came in third. They won toys.

Jaffrey Riverfest has been held on the last weekend of July for the past 12 summers.

Riverfest was started by TEAM Jaffrey as part of the community group's efforts to support, improve and revitalize downtown Jaffrey.

It's about supporting the local Main Street businesses and drawing people downtown where they can discover all that Jaffrey has to offer, said TEAM Jaffrey executive director Marie Cassady.

But for a town that doesn't have an old home day, Riverfest has filled that void to become an annual summer gathering for residents.

Aside from Cassady, the event is run by volunteers and included music on the common, a 5K road race in the morning, book and yard sales, craft vendors, a bouncy house, a food court, farmers' market, face painting and fitness demonstrations.

The army of volunteers is testament to what a great town Jaffrey is, Cassady said.

"Our community is only as good as we make it. It's up to us," she said.
