Bedford stays alive in Babe Ruth 13’s tourney; Manchester loses on Saturday night
MANCHESTER — Bedford knocked off Central Maine 12-4, in an early game on Sunday to stave off elimination in the Babe Ruth 13-year-old New England Regional tournament.
A six-run outburst in the second inning powered Bedford to the victory. Bedford, the New Hampshire champion, evened its record in the tournament at 1-1 and plays again on Monday at 5 p.m. against the loser of the late game on Sunday between Rhode Island and Connecticut.
Bedford had lost its first game in the double elimination event, 9-5, to Plymouth, Mass., on Saturday.
Manchester, the host team in the tournament, will try to match Bedford’s effort in a game at 4 p.m. on Sunday against Brattleboro, Vt.
Manchester lost its opener, 7-2, to Coventry, R.I., on Saturday night.
“Coventry’s a strong team,” said Manchester coach Tony Doucette. “Their pitchers threw strikes and defensively they made every play.”
Manchester managed just five hits in Saturday’s game.
