Manchester Babe Ruth 14's prevail again at regionals

Manchester's Hanagan All-Stars are 2-0 in the Babe Ruth League Baseball 14-year-olds New England Regional Tournament.

The locals on Saturday used a complete-game effort from righthander Matt Reynolds to defeat Norwood, Mass., 4-3, in Westfield, Mass.

Reynolds allowed six hits and one walk while fanning two. His defense played well behind him.

And he even benefited from an alert play by his manager, Mickey Hanagan.

Norwood trailed 4-0 early, but trimmed the deficit to 4-3 in the fourth. With a runner on third, a Norwood player hit a fly ball to the outfield. The runner seemingly tagged up and scored the tying run, but Hanagan noticed he left too early and appealed the play. The appeal proved successful, and Manchester retained its lead.

Johnny Robinson's two-run single in the second inning was the big blow of the game. Garrett Olivar, Joey Silva, Nate Hall and Jason Derome added two hits each for Manchester, which moved on to play Central Maine in a 1 p.m. game today.

The winner of that game advances to the semifinal round.
